After only a few holes, an official announcement was made that no more play was possible for the third day of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. The storm Amy that struck the three Scottish venues with very strong winds of about 60 mph caused the brutal conditions. Due to these harsh conditions, it was not possible to ensure both the safety and fairness of the play on the links courses, and therefore, the decision was made by tournament officials not to allow any further competition for the day
Organisers halt play after brief attempt to continueTournament officials tried an unusual “shotgun” start at 12:30 pm local time to have the round start simultaneously across St Andrews, Kingsbarns, and Carnoustie. All 164 professionals and an equal number of amateur partners were placed at different courses to get the round ahead of the storm.
But, less than 20 minutes into the round, the weather changed to the point that it was not possible to play. On some exposed greens, golfers reported that balls were moving in the wind before they even touched them, so it was not possible to have a fair competition. Robert MacIntyre of Scotland, who was tied at -12 going into the day with Richard Sterne of South Africa, only managed one tee shot before the suspension of play.
It was decided by officials to stop play as they were warned of strong winds later in the day. The emphasis changed from trying to keep the round going to the safety of the players and upholding the integrity of the competition.
Robert MacIntyre and Richard Sterne lead as storm disrupts plansAfter Day 2, both Robert MacIntyre and Richard Sterne were sharing the lead. MacIntyre had done well with his calm 66 at Kingsbarns, which was already a difficult course, while most of the players were having a hard time with the strong winds and the rain that came in the middle of the day.

The likes of Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood were not in a better position as they also had to endure heavy wind and rain. Nevertheless, the storm Amy that came soon after made everything uncontrollable. Resulting in Day 3 being entirely blanked out, the tournament may now face problems with its schedule. Depending on the state of the storm overnight, officials might resort to compressing the following rounds or changing tee times.
