Aamir Khan has always maintained an amicable relationship with both his ex-wives, Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao. Recently, the Bollywood superstar opened up about a personal chapter from his past, seeking marriage counselling during his separation from Reena.
Aamir Khan reveals his initial resistance to marriage counselling
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Aamir shared that he and Reena Dutta visited a marriage counsellor for about one and a half years while navigating their separation. Interestingly, the actor confessed that he was initially very resistant to the idea. “Main jab pehli dafa... therapy toh nahi thi woh (My first time... I wouldn’t call it therapy); I think it was more like counseling,” he said.
Aamir went on to admit how reluctant he was to open up in front of a stranger. Recalling the moment, he shared, “Jab Reena aur main alag ho rahe the tab kareeban 1.5 years marriage counsellor ke pass gaye the. Aur mujhe yaad hai ki main uske sakht khilaaf tha. Main bohot khilaaf tha. (When Reena and I were separating, we went to a marriage counsellor for about 1.5 years. I was completely against it).”
He even told Reena he couldn’t imagine sharing his private thoughts and emotions with someone he barely knew. “How could I open my heart to a complete stranger?” he remembered telling her.
Reena Dutta convinced Aamir to seek help during their separation
However, it was Reena who encouraged him to give it a try. Respecting her wish, Aamir agreed to attend the sessions. Surprisingly, after just two or three meetings, his perspective started shifting. “Because in the beginning, I also stayed quiet, spoke very little. But after 2–3 sessions, I started to build trust in the therapist,” he revealed.

Reflecting deeper on his experience, Aamir added that having the right counsellor made all the difference. Trust slowly blossomed, and with it, he found the space to open up about things he had kept bottled inside.
For those unfamiliar, Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta got married in 1986. They have two children together, daughter Ira Khan and son Junaid Khan. After 16 years of marriage, they parted ways amicably in 2002.
