Coimbatore: Two people died after a motorcycle they were travelling on collided head-on with a mini truck coming from the opposite direction on Annur- Coimbatore Road near Kurukampalayam Pirivu late on Saturday night.
The deceased have been identified as J Gnanasekaran, 25, from Tiruvannamalai district, and M Marisamy, 36, from Madurai district. Police said the two were working in a copper wire manufacturing company at Kattampatti in Coimbatore district. They were staying in a rental room at Ganeshapuram.
Police said the accident took place when the two were returning to their room after work on Saturday night. Gnanasekaran was riding the bike, with Marisamy ridding pillion. "Gnanasekaran collided with a mini truck coming from the opposite direction, when he attempted to overtake a bus. The bike was mangled completely, and the two succumbed to severe head injuries on the spot.
Other motorists alerted Annur police who retrieved the bodies sent them to the Mettupalayam government hospital for a postmortem. The bodies were handed over to their family members after a postmortem on Sunday.
Meanwhile, police have registered a case against the mini truck driver and are investigating further.
