Krishnagiri: A 60-year-old farmer was trampled to death by a wild elephant near Denkanikottai in Krishnagiri district early on Sunday morning.
The deceased has been identified as P Madalaimuthu from Chinnamalai.
A forest officer said Madalaimuthu had taken his cows for grazing in the forest on Saturday. When he failed to return home, his family went looking for him the next morning and found his body in the Chinnamalai forest beat area.
Anchetty forest range officer (FRO) Govindan and other officials visited the spot. "The body bore signs of having been attacked by an elephant," the FRO said. The body was sent to the Denkanikottai Government Hospital for a postmortem. He added that the exact time of death could be ascertained only after the postmortem. The forest department is investigating the incident.
