driving on the European mainland this summer risk steep fines and even being turned away at borders for not having some key mandatory items with them, experts warn. Legal requirements for drivers vary between European countries and certain items are compulsory in nations like France, , Germany and , but only recommended in the UK, number plates firm says.
The company advises UK motorists to check the current regulations before setting off on their trip and flags some key things you'll need to have to avoid financial penalties or disruptions to your route.
Show Plates Word says: "Skipping these essentials can turn a relaxing holiday into a stressful, expensive mistake. With just a few small checks and preparations, UK drivers can enjoy Europe's roads safely - and legally - this summer."
Since the UK left the European Union, the old GB sticker isn't recognised for driving abroad anymore, with UK-registered vehicles now required to display a UK identifier.
This can be either on the number plate or on a separate sticker. Show Plates World explains: "If your number plate shows the Euro symbol or a national flag like the St George's Cross, you'll need a UK sticker on the rear of your car - otherwise, you could be stopped or fined, especially in countries like Spain or Cyprus."
In some countries, access to certain city zones may even be restricted if your vehicle isn't clearly marked, though magnetic or adhesive UK stickers are widely available, the firm says.
Show Plates World warns that enforcement tends to be strict at ferry ports and low-emission zones, and failure to display the correct identifier could see you being hit with fines or not being allowed to enter specific urban areas.
Road users could reportedly be slapped with a while on the continent for driving without the correct sticker.
Warning triangle and high-visibility vestA number of European Union countries, like France, Spain, Germany, and Italy, have a legal requirement for drivers to carry at least one warning triangle and a reflective vest in their vehicles while driving.
The firm explains that in France and Spain, "the vest must be kept inside the cabin - not in the boot - so it can be worn immediately if you need to leave the vehicle in an emergency".
In some regions, a vest is required for every passenger, it adds.
Some regions also require a vest for every passenger. Failure to carry the correct safety equipment could could see drivers hit with fines of up to €135 (£113.85) in France or administrative penalties elsewhere.
Foreign-registered cars are frequently checked for compliance in Austria and Italy, making it especially vital that you have all you need while on the road.
Headlamp beam deflectorsCars built in the UK are designed for driving on the left side of the road, unlike many European countries.
As a result, the headlights are angled towards the left verge which means when they're driven in countries that drive on right, oncoming traffic can get dazzled.
It's therefore a requirement in many European counties to ensure that headlamp beam deflectors are used.
Show Plates World says: "You must either attach beam deflector stickers or adjust the headlight setting manually using the vehicle's controls. It's a small step that's easy to overlook, but one that's enforced in countries like France and Germany."
They're required at all times, and are particularly important when on mountain roads or moving through tunnels.
It's important to consider this rule and its impact on the cost of your trip as beam converter kits are costly, and most UK hire cars won't have them fitted as standard, meaning you may have to specifically request them.
But neglecting to ensure you have them can be a major hazard to other drivers and yourself, and may also see you slapped with fines, the company says.
warns on its website that driving in France without them carries an on-the-spot €90 (£75.90) fine
