Newcastle United are ready to reignite their interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and beat Liverpool to his signature, according to reports. The Magpies have less than a month to rescue what has been a nightmare summer transfer window thus far, and Eddie Howe wants Guehi to upgrade his centre-back options.
According to The Times, Liverpool are also interested in the 25-year-old but have no plans to match Palace's £50million asking price when his contract expires next summer. It's claimed that Newcastle also do not intend to bid that high but hope they can strike a deal worth around £40m near the deadline.
The Magpies attempted to sign Guehi on three occasions last summer but Palace rejected each bid, a decision that proved successful after they achieved a historic FA Cup triumph in May.
It is a different situation this time around, though, considering it is one of their final chances to cash in before he becomes a free agent.
Howe's search for a right-sided centre-back had Atalanta's Giorgio Scalvini in his crosshairs earlier this summer. However, the Serie A club rejected any prospect of losing the 21-year-old talent.
So Newcastle have reverted their attention back to Guehi, and they now have the allure of Champions League football on offer at St. James' Park.
The Tyneside outfit will attempt to save their summer, in which they have repeatedly faced rejection from their top targets.

Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha opted for Manchester United, James Trafford chose to return to Manchester City, while Liverpool won the race for Hugo Ekitike.
The Premier League champions rubbed salt in the wounds with their pursuit of Alexander Isak, who wants to leave Newcastle for Anfield this summer.
Isak's future could rely on the Magpies' ability to sign a replacement as they pursue separate deals for Yoane Wissa and Benjamin Sesko.
They could lose another player to Old Trafford, though, with United also in the frame for Sesko as Ruben Amorim bids to complete his attacking overhaul.
Newcastle are thought to have identified Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and Wolves' Jorgen Strand Larsen as alternatives, should the 22-year-old join United instead.
Howe can feel like he has got one over on Liverpool if he thwarts their interest in Guehi and recruits the England international.
But Palace will be reluctant sellers ahead of their European campaign, whether that is in the Europa League ord Conference League.
