Meghan Markle was criticised for lacking "depth and a unique" angle in order to attract more viewers to her Netflix series, just days after the latest rankings showed it flopped. With Love, Meghan was released back in March but the latest figures showed that it could not keep its original viewers.
During the first week of its release, the Duchess of Sussex's series climbed into Netflix's Global Top 10 Shows list with 2.6million views. But nearly five months later, it took a nose-dive to the 383rd spot globally with 5.3million views.
Now a PR expert explained why Meghan's show failed to keep momentum and cautioned the Duchess to focus on one key thing ahead of the second season's launch this autumn.
Edward Coram-James, CEO of Go Up, told the Express: "To be honest, no [I wasn't surprised about the flop].
"The initial surge, which reached the top 10 for a day or two, was mainly driven by curiosity about Meghan Markle.
"However, the quick decline to 383rd place worldwide shows that people didn't stick around because the content didn't keep their interest."
Mr Coram-James explained that Meghan's series did not have "enough story depth" to keep the viewer interested and eager to watch more.
He also speculated that its second season, due in autumn, could face similar challenges.
The expert said: "They watched because it was her, but they didn't stay because the show didn't have enough story depth or a unique angle to make them want to keep watching.
"As for With Love, Meghan Season 2, I don't expect a big jump in its rankings. Unless there's a major change up in content, Season 2 might face similar challenges."
The PR specialist urged the Duchess to focus on her brand, As Ever, which "perfectly to her strengths".
He said: "Going forward, Meghan should double down on As Ever. The product line plays perfectly to her strengths and directly connects with consumers who admire her style and values."
