Black dots located on the windscreen of every and vehicle on the road have a secret second purpose, according to leading experts. Most road users are likely aware the black dots, properly known as frits, are located on the glass to distribute temperature.
They help to evenly distribute heat across the windscreen, lowering the risk of a phenomenon known as lensing. This is where straight lines can appear curved or bowed as a result of a major temperature difference. However, experts at stress that regulating temperature is not the only important factor.
The specialists stress that the frits are also in place to help preserve the urethane sealant around the glass screen.
They explained "Another role that car windscreen frits play is that they protect the urethane sealant that is used to adhere glass to its frame - keeping it robustly in place.
"The black enamel blocks the sun's rays and prevents the sealant from melting and causing the glass to fall out of the frame. This ensures the glass remains firmly in place and the vehicle is safe to drive."
Meanwhile, the frits are also in place to act as a
The frits help create etches on the surface of the screen, making the glass rougher so the adhesive can stick better in place.
stressed: "They help preserve the urethane sealant used to bond the glass to the frame.
"They use the black enamel outside the windshield to block the sun's ultraviolet rays from melting the adhesive underneath the band. This keeps the windows firmly glued in their place."
The importance of frits to the safety of the glass car windscreen means any damage must be immediately addressed.
Frits which are seen to be peeling away or fading are believed to compromise the structural integrity of the screen.
However, motorists could be caught out if their vehicle develops any issues with hefty fees in place for repairs.
Fixing a windscreen could set drivers back anywhere from between £200 and £1,000 with costs varying on the type of make and model affected.
