UK households who have an extractor fan in their kitchen are being urged to switch it off and clean it immediately - because it's likely to be harbouring piles of nasty bacteria.
Kitchen experts have identified the most bacteria ridden areas of modern including the usual suspects like sinks and sponges - and found that extractor fans take the top spot. Using data from the National Library of Medicine, found that extractor fans are not just dirty - but a full on 'health risk'.
They said: "Searches for 'clean have spiked by 57% over recent weeks and while the deep kitchen clean can feel overwhelming, leaving it too long could actually pose a health risk.
"The can be a hotspot for germs and bacteria. Dangerous pathogens such as E.coli, salmonella and listeria can quickly spread via food, utensils or surfaces if you aren't careful."
They urged people to keep extractor fans 'spick and span' by following four simple steps:
1. Turn the power off
2. Remove the filters and wash them with warm soapy water
3. Wipe down the fan blades and interior with a damp cloth and soapy water
4. Allow to completely dry and reassemble
They added: "Washing up liquid is great for this as it has anti-grease properties that will make it easier to remove any built-up grime.
"It is recommended to do this every three months to keep them in good working order.
"Cleaning the extractor fan isn't going to be anyone's favourite, however they can be a breeding ground for bacteria due to the dust, grease and other debris they accumulate which can then potentially spread the bacteria further into the air.
"Like with most things if your extractor fan is dirty, not only is it a health risk, but it will impact its effectiveness to do the job well."
