Russia Warns US, Japan, South Korea Against Forming Anti-North Korea Alliance

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, currently visiting North Korea, has issued a stark warning to the United States, Japan, and South Korea, urging them to halt the formation of any alliance perceived as being directed against either North Korea or Russia. Lavrov's remarks come amidst growing military cooperation between the three allied nations, which Moscow and Pyongyang view as a dangerous encirclement strategy.

The warning follows recent joint military exercises conducted by the US, Japan, and South Korea near the Korean Peninsula, which included the involvement of US bombers equipped with nuclear capabilities. Russia and North Korea interpret these drills as the establishment of a new security bloc specifically targeting their interests.

"Don't Create Factions Against Us" – Lavrov's Stance

Military and economic ties between Russia and North Korea have seen a significant increase in recent years. North Korea has reportedly supplied ammunition to Russia for the conflict in Ukraine and, according to various reports, has even provided troops. Following a meeting with North Korean officials in the coastal resort town of Wonsan, Lavrov explicitly stated that the US, Japan, and South Korea should curb their military exercises and alliance activities. He emphasized, "We warn against exploiting these ties to build alliances directed against anyone, including North Korea and, of course, Russia."

Support for North Korea's Nuclear Program and Gratitude for Ukraine Aid

Lavrov also voiced Russia's support for North Korea's nuclear weapons development efforts, asserting that this technology is the result of North Korean scientists' hard work. He added that Russia "understands the reasons behind their decision," echoing North Korea's long-held argument that its nuclear program is a necessary defense against perceived US threats.

Furthermore, Lavrov acknowledged North Korea's assistance in the Ukraine conflict, specifically mentioning the help of North Korean soldiers in repelling a Ukrainian attack on the Kursk border. He expressed Russia's gratitude for this support. The visit also saw discussions about promoting tourism, with Lavrov suggesting the opening of new routes and easier travel, including air travel, for Russian tourists to North Korea's recently developed Wonsan resort area.
