Data from AIIMS Bhopal’s cancer department reveals a concerning rise in breast cancer among men. Once affecting one man for every 100 women, the ratio has now increased to four men. Experts link this rise to hormonal imbalances caused by factors such as obesity, poor diet, and smoking.
Dr. Madhavanand Kar, Director at AIIMS Bhopal, explains that unhealthy lifestyles are raising estrogen levels in men, which leads to breast lumps and potential cancer development. Male breast tissue is less than in women, making early detection difficult and delaying diagnosis.
Notably, increasing obesity rates among men and even children exacerbate the risk, as excess fat triggers higher estrogen production. Fast food consumption laden with chemicals further disturbs hormonal balance. Chemicals used in farming and food production, including steroids in poultry, also contribute to hormone disruption.
Men are advised to watch for symptoms such as:
-
A new lump near the breastbone,
-
Changes in skin texture,
-
Alterations in the nipple,
-
Swelling near the armpits.
Early detection and lifestyle modifications are crucial for prevention and better outcomes.
