Jake Paul has labelled Canelo Alvarez's victory over William Scull as "embarrassing", on a night when he could have been squaring off against the Mexican sensation himself.
Paul was reportedly close to confirming a blockbuster bout with Alvarez for this weekend in Las Vegas, but the super-middleweight champ changed his mind and opted to face fellow title holder Scull in Saudi Arabia instead. As it turned out, Alvarez easily triumphed on Saturday night, with Scull barely putting up a fight.
Now, Paul is set to take on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, a former opponent of Alvarez, on July 12. He didn't mince words about Alvarez's performance in Riyadh, posting a succinct "Embarrassing" on social media. Paul will have to bide his time until at least next year for a chance to fight Alvarez, who recently squared off with Terence Crawford ahead of their anticipated clash in Sin City on September 12. Earlier, Paul had dismissed the Middle Eastern interest in Alvarez, tweeting: ""Nobody over there cares about cinnamon bun. Pussy cat."

Alvarez decided against fighting Paul when it became apparent that he would miss out on a match with Crawford - and a lucrative deal with Saudi Arabia. He subsequently agreed to a four-fight contract worth $200million, which includes two fights next year. Alvarez has clarified his stance on refusing a matchup with Paul, sharing his thoughts with CBS Sports: "I think I did the correct thing being with Turki Alalshikh. That's the way I feel.
I think there is so much potential in the future and that's why we chose to be working with him. Because [Scull] is better for me [as an opponent] at this point in my career. I just want to continue making history. I don't even call [boxing Paul] a fight, it's more of an event than a fight.
That event can wait until I retire. "Paul found himself on the back foot, justifying his choice to step into the ring with Chavez Jr: "Julio Cesar Chavez Jr is a former champion, a cruiserweight world champion, the same weight as me, the same size as me, and 20 years more boxing experience than me.
Let's get the excuses out of the way. ""Last week, Paddy Pimblett beat Michael Chandler, and the whole world lost their mind, but not a single person mentioned Michael Chandler's age.
That's because he's still within his prime ages, the same age as Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. If people didn't have a problem with Paddy, then why do they have a problem with me? So, when I beat him, don't even try to cry about his age. ".
