Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): I know it is dark; and though I have lain,
Awake, as I guess, an hour or twain,
I have not once opened the lids of my eyes,
But I lie in the dark, as a blind man lies –Samuel Taylor Coleridge
The sun seems to have gone into the lap of the clouds. Barely anyone knows when the residents of Bhopal saw the face of the eternal lamp of the sky.
The welkin over the city is overcast. The dim sun peeps through the cloudy sky for a while and disappears. The weather is cool, and the residents wake up to the coos of cuckoos.
One who has not experienced the monsoon in Bhopal may have missed out on something out of the ordinary. There are problems on the roads. Yet every city has these problems, which are just part of modern life.
These days, if one visits the Upper Lake, one can see the hillocks garnished with green trees, and the grey lake seems to be dancing under the dark clouds.
If you look at the island (Tkia Tapu) in the middle of the Upper Lake, you will find one part of the Upper has mingled with the horizon. It is endless.
There are clouds everywhere. Clouds hover over the Upper Lake. Clouds are creeping into the lap of the firmament. Clouds hover over the trees. Clouds then turn into rain, soaking the city.
As the evening descends, darkness deepens. Rain continues to fall. The wind moans, struggling among the dark, deep forests. The rainwater is dripping down from the ceiling and is leaching through the walls of many houses.

The elderly residents of the city remember the days of the bygone era. They relate how they used to enjoy the rainy season, but the city was not overcrowded then. Nor were there many skyscrapers as are seen today.
But then the roads were not as good as they are today. The roads were empty after the sunset. As you sit beside a window, you can enjoy the cooing of cuckoos.
The ditches in most of the thoroughfares are filled with water. A speeding car passing by you may disturb your morning by soaking you with holy water.
Both sides of thoroughfares are scattered with dry leaves. But as one looks at the sky his heart glistens with rapturous tinges. When one wakes up in the morning, one has the terrific urge to lie in bed all day and read.
But instead of going to bed again, he may listen to the trickling rain. Bhopal becomes young and green in the rainy season. At night, you may hear the croaking toads from drains and water-filled ditches.
Drenched in rainwater, the stray cows often low aloud, seeking a shelter.
