Mumbai: The D B Marg Police have arrested Anand Hanumanta Sangi, a hardened criminal who had been absconding for the past 14 years in connection with a 2011 attempted armed robbery case. The arrest was made in Telangana’s Yadadri district following a meticulously planned operation by the Mumbai Police.
The case dates back to 2011, when an FIR was registered at DB Marg Police Station under IPC Sections 399 and 402 (related to criminal conspiracy to commit dacoity), along with the Arms Act Sections 3, 4, and 25, and Maharashtra Police Act Section 37(1)(A). Sangi had managed to evade arrest ever since, even escaping a police trap set up in Mira-Bhayandar about a year ago.
According to police sources, Sangi had completely severed contact with known associates and family, making it difficult to trace him. However, a breakthrough came last month when intelligence indicated that he was residing near the village of Mariyala in Telangana. A DB Marg Police team was immediately dispatched to locate him.
The team learned that Sangi was living in the forest area on the outskirts of the village. Further investigation revealed that he had obtained a house through the Indira Awas Yojana, a government housing scheme. Using this information, officers disguised themselves as housing scheme officials and approached Sangi at his residence. After tactfully gaining his trust, they apprehended him.
