A man, believed to be around 40 years old, was found dead on the footpath near the Maschetti Court building on Nashikrao Tirpude Marg, Churchgate, late on the night of May 23. The deceased’s identity is yet to be confirmed.

According to police, the body was that of a slim, brown-complexioned man, approximately 5'9" tall. He was wearing a blue patterned shirt, dark-coloured full-length trousers, and had a handkerchief tied around his head. Efforts are currently underway to identify and apprehend the absconding accused.

An eyewitness, Harsh Shah, 31, a share market broker residing in Fort, reported the incident. Shah had parked his scooter near the Maschetti Court building and left for his office in Malad by local train. After finishing work, he returned to Churchgate around 11:25 p.m. and headed to retrieve his scooter. Upon reaching the spot, he saw a man lying on the pavement with a handkerchief tied around his head. Shah witnessed an unidentified man repeatedly striking the victim on the head with a large stone. Shocked and terrified, Shah rushed to Churchgate station and informed police officers on duty. He also called the police control room using the emergency number 100.

Shah then accompanied the police back to the crime scene, where they found the victim lying in a pool of blood. The assailant had already fled by that time. The police transported the victim to a government hospital by ambulance. After examination, the doctor confirmed that the man had died on the spot due to severe head injuries.

Based on Shah’s statement and the eyewitness account, the Azad Maidan police have registered a case of murder and launched an investigation.
