All 16 ministers in Gujarat on Thursday submitted their resignations to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel ahead of a cabinet expansion scheduled for Friday, according to state BJP sources quoted by PTI.
Officials said the cabinet expansion will take place at 11.30 am on Friday, marking a significant reshuffle in the state government.
Gujarat Cabinet: What’s Changing?
A senior BJP leader said that around 10 new ministers are likely to be inducted, while nearly half of the current ones may be replaced. The move is part of the party’s efforts to refresh the leadership team before upcoming political events.
At present, the Gujarat cabinet has 17 members, including Chief Minister Patel. Among them, eight are cabinet-rank ministers and eight are Ministers of State (MoS).
Gujarat Cabinet: Capacity for 27 Ministers
Under the rules, Gujarat’s 182-member assembly allows up to 27 ministers (15 per cent of the total strength). This means the cabinet still has room for expansion.
Earlier this month, Jagdish Vishwakarma, who served as a Minister of State, was appointed the new president of the Gujarat BJP, replacing Union Minister CR Paatil.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was sworn in for his second term on 12 December 2022. The upcoming reshuffle is expected to give a new shape to his team as the government looks ahead to future elections.
