Income Tax Last Date Extension: The Income Tax Department has given a big relief to the taxpayers. The date for filing ITR has now been extended. Earlier, the deadline was 31 July, which was later extended to 15 September. Now once again, the government has made a big announcement and extended the last date for filing ITR by one day, i.e., till 16 September.

This decision will provide relief to crores of people who have not been able to file ITR on time for some reason. The government says that this step has been taken keeping in view the convenience of the taxpayers and technical reasons. For a long time, people were demanding an extension of the last date.

Income Tax Department posted

The Income Tax Department wrote in a post on X- 'The last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR), which was earlier 31 July 2025, was extended to 15 September 2025. Now the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has decided to extend this date further. The last date for filing the Income Tax Return (ITR) has been extended from 15 September 2025 to 16 September 2025. To implement this change, the e-filing portal will be in maintenance mode from 12:00 pm to 2:30 am on 16 September 2025.'

The difference between last time and this time is decreasing rapidly.

The difference is clearly visible when comparing the return filing for the financial year 2024-25. Last time, i.e., till 31 July 2024, the figure of income tax return filing had reached 7.28 crores. By 7 September 2025, i.e., a week before the last date, only 4.89 crore returns could be filed. At the same time, today, on the last date, i.e., 15 September, till evening, the number of ITR filers has crossed 7 crores. However, many people are still not able to file ITR, due to which the last date for filing income tax returns has been extended.

What are the reasons behind slow filing?

Many reasons are being given due to which people are not able to file returns on time this time. This year, many changes have been made in all the ITR forms, due to which the government has extended the last date from 31 July to 15 September this time. However, many people are still facing some problems. Many people have received Form 16 and other documents late. At the same time, there have been problems on the portal due to some technical glitches.
