Arsenal have already completed £34m Eberechi Eze transfer alternative

Arsenal have already spent £208 million in the summer transfer window and it does not look like they are finished splashing the cash just yet.

Six new players have arrived at the club to offset the eight players that left, with the trio of Viktor Gyokeres (£64m), Martin Zubimendi (£55m) and Noni Madueke (£52m) making up the bulk of that spend.

Heading into the transfer window Arsenal prioritised a new back-up goalkeeper, a defender, a midfielder, a winger and a striker and with the six signings they have filled those gaps and then some.

The priority now will be on getting some fringe players out of the door, which could potentially raise funds for one final signing.

Reiss Nelson looks set to leave the club, albeit only on loan once more. Money could be made from selling the likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Albert Sambi Lokonga and even Leandro Trossard.

Bringing money in for any or all of those would lead to the Gunners making their final move of the transfer window for Eberechi Eze. The Crystal Palace star has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium for some time now, but is he really needed?

The 27-year-old is hugely important to Palace and is therefore extremely valuable to them. He has a release clause of £67.5m which is only active until the start of the Premier League season. After that, he may cost more although he only has a contract in south London until 2027.

That would take Arsenal's summer spend past the £275m mark, with minimal amounts for Nuno Tavares and Marquinhos having come into the club.

The Gunners could keep that money in their pocket for a January signing to boost the squad mid-season instead.

There is no doubting Eze is a talented player and would add quality to Mikel Arteta's squad. The question really comes in where he plays.

The majority of Eze's appearances in the Premier League have either come in a central midfield or attacking midfield role.

He has played 85 Premier League games centrally, with 29 coming as a left winger and 18 in a left midfield role. He averages a goal involvement almost every other game when played centrally, with 40 goal involvements (25 goals and 15 assists) in those 85 appearances.

When played on the left, he has nine goals and seven assists to his name in 47 appearances, so an average of a goal involvement almost every three games.

Interestingly, given his Premier League career has been spent with Palace, who will lose more games than the likes of Arsenal, Eze has only been on the losing side six times in those 132 matches when he has had a goal involvement.

Eze's versatility is a positive, given he is comfortable in different roles and were he signed as a left winger, you would agree with the move as competition for Gabriel Martinelli and the potential to go straight into the starting lineup.

Having played centrally a lot, however, Eze would be battling Martin Odegaard - the club captain - and £105m man Declan Rice, for a spot in the XI, given it is fair to say he would be somewhat wasted in the six role.

Odegaard may not have had his best season in 2024/25, but as club captain he is not being left out of the team and rice's performances mean he would not drop out either, meaning Eze would have to bide his time and make an impression when given a chance from the bench.

Arsenal need squad depth for sure and Eze would offer that, but he is too good to be playing second fiddle and unless Arteta sees him as a left winger first and foremost, do they really need to splash out £67.5m to sign him?
